Import data from a text or CSV file into a script

I am attempting to write a script that takes data values stored in a text file or CSV file and apply that data to flame variations. There is a lot of data and I would like to be able to input the next data value in the file with each loop of the script. I am unable to find anything showing how to import or referencing an external file. Any help is greatly appreciated.
